For the last 17 years, I have been the proud owner of a vintage Hammond C3 organ. It was a classy piece that generated that classic Hammond Jazz style that I fell in love with after seeing Jimmy Smith so many years ago. As work demands took me away from playing, it was neglected. Recently, I fired it up and began my usual warm up but the instrument sounded different and seemed sluggish. I began my search for a technician or service center. I called around to friends and musicians I know to ask who was the best with Hammond organs. Tried several places when a friend told me “you need to call Scott at Retrotone. I went on line to the website read the mission statement, saw the pictures and called Scott. Scott was outgoing, warm and we chatted for some time. I asked if he would be willing to stop by the house to check out my C3. I wasn’t sure what the issue(s) might be and needed an assessment. No promises, just check it out. Scott and Mike showed up for the evening appointment and began taking a “quick” look at the instrument. What came next was a litany of potential ills and issues. Scott asked if he could take the instrument back to his shop to give the C3 a thorough analysis and estimate of issues and cures. Shortly thereafter, Scott provided an incredible analysis of the issues and solutions for my 1958 Hammond C3, an estimated cost and a timeframe for completion. Done! When the C3 repairs and upgrades were completed I was invited to his office to see the finished product. I was blown away when I saw it. I looked like it was brand new – never had it been this beautiful. When we fired up the instrument, it literally blew door off the place. The touch, the tone, the expressiveness of the instrument was overwhelming. Words can’t fully express how impressed I was with the craftmanship, professionalism and clearly a true passion for the instrument. I told Scott that I wanted to gift my C3 to my son. I asked if he knew anyone who could deliver the C3 to by son in Texas? He said he would do it, set it up for him and show him his handiwork. Again, I was just amazed and most appreciative. In the 17years I have owned this instrument, no one that had ever serviced this organ to its potential nor has done the quality of repair and revitalization of my C3 to the full extent as done by Retrotone and Scott Lowery.
